GAA Pickems

in progress

Bracket predictions for the GAA football championship — four provincial draws, private leagues, chips and a live leaderboard.

  • TypeScript
  • React
  • Express
  • Supabase
  • PostgreSQL

A full-stack web app for picking winners in the GAA football championship. You fill in brackets across the main GAA football and hurling tournaments.

What’s interesting about it

I’m a fan of the Fantasy Premier League(FPL) game, and wanted a similar game to play and compete with my friends - but I did not have the resources or time to do full player stat tracking to achieve this. I decided to go with a “pick’ems” format that is essentially just picking match winners with some extra mechanics to gamify it

Modifiers (like FPL chips)

  • Double Points - simple, choose one of your predictions to reward you double if correct
  • Bracket Predictions - Predict the entire bracket from the outset, awarding more points than picking each individual match
  • Super Sub - in bracket predictions, you can have a team replace your selection for the rest of the bracket

Leaderboards and Leagues

The main competive driver is trying to top the overall leaderboard and win leagues with your friends. You also get assigned to a league based on the county you support.

Technical Details

A React and TypeScript app on the front end, an Express REST API behind it, and Supabase for auth and Postgres. Building the API was the most interesting part as I had already done supabase/postgres work in the past. Lots of time was spent building an admin panel to set up the matches and record results - optimisitcally would like to build a scraper or proper API access to handle this in the future (If anyone knows an API for GAA tournaments and results please let me know)

Where it is

Paused until next season, initial playtest among small pool of friends will resume in the Spring for the league and optimistic for a public release ahead of the 2027 championship
